ST PETERSBURG, FL – The Tampa Bay Rowdies unveiled their full preseason schedule on Tuesday, with the Green and Gold set to play five preseason games in preparation for the 2022 USL Championship season kickoff on Sunday, March 13 at Birmingham Legion FC. All of the Rowdies preseason games will be closed to the general public.

The Rowdies commence preseason action when they host Florida International University’s men’s soccer team at Al Lang Stadium on Saturday, February 12. The following Saturday, the Rowdies then will cross I-4 to face Major League Soccer’s Orlando City SC on. 

On Wednesday, February 23, the Rowdies will match up with the University of South Florida at Corbett Soccer Stadium before traveling to battle the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on Saturday, February 26.

To close out the preseason, the Rowdies host South Georgia Tormenta FC of USL League One on Saturday, March 5.

This season, the USL Championship returns to its traditional two-conference competition, with the top seven teams from the Eastern and Western Conference earning a spot in the playoffs.

ST PETERSBURG, FL – The United Soccer League today announced its 2022 USL on ESPN national telecast schedule, with three Tampa Bay Rowdies games set to be featured in the national spotlight.

Tampa Bay’s season opener kicks off the league’s slate of nationally televised games on ESPN2, as the Rowdies travel to face Birmingham Legion FC in the club’s first league game at its new home, Protective Stadium on Sunday, March 13 at 5pm ET.

The Green and Gold will again feature on ESPN2 when they make their first trip out west to face Phoenix Rising FC at Wild Horse Pass Stadium. The two perennial USL Championship favorites met last year at Al Lang Stadium, with the Rowdies claiming a  2-1 victory.  This year’s showdown will kickoff on Sunday, May 15 at 8 pm ET. 

ESPN’s cameras will turn to Al Lang Stadium on Wednesday, September 28, as they square off against the Western Conference’s El Paso Locomotive FC. This will be the first meeting between the two sides, with kickoff in Downtown St. Petersburg set for 8pm ET.

The USL also confirmed a schedule change for the Rowdies’ game versus FC Tulsa, which will now take place on Saturday, April 16.

Combined with nearly 700 USL Championship and USL League One games on ESPN+, USL fans can watch the entire regular season, playoffs, and finals for both leagues on ESPN platforms.

This year’s 19-match slate on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes nearly triples the USL’s linear presence since 2018. The schedule features intriguing rivalry and interconference matchups at some of the country’s best soccer cities.

Other notable regular season matchups include newcomer Monterey Bay F.C. playing host to San Antonio FC at Cardinale Stadium on June 11, and a week later fellow new arrival Detroit City FC take on perennial title contender El Paso Locomotive FC on June 18 at Keyworth Stadium. On July 20, a rematch of the 2018 Championship Final between Louisville City FC and Phoenix Rising FC takes place at Lynn Family Stadium.

The 2022 USL League One Final airs on Sunday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, building on last year’s first League One regular season game to air nationally as Union Omaha seeks to defend its crown this campaign.

The following weekend, the 2022 USL Championship Final airs on Sunday, November 13 at 9pm ET, (network to be announced), bringing the curtain down on the season prior to the kickoff of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on November 21.

ST PETERSBURG, FL – The Tampa Bay Rowdies have acquired goalkeeper CJ Cochran on loan from OKC Energy FC after starting regularly for the USL Championship over the last two seasons. 

Cochran,30, has appeared in over 100 matches during his seven years as a professional. He is the second keeper confirmed to the Rowdies roster for 2022, joining returning keeper Raiko Arozarena.

“Goalkeeper is a position where the older you get, the better you get because a lot of it is about decision making,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “CJ’s got over 100 appearances, which was important to us considering we have a young keeper with huge potential in Raiko. So, we have a nice balance there now with CJ. He brings a very good presence. He’s good at coming for crosses and balls in the box. I think we’ve shown if we deal with that well, we can be successful on the defensive side of the game.”

A native of Georgia, Cochran stayed close to home for his college career, playing four standout seasons for Georgia State University’s men’s program. He remained in Georgia after graduation to make his professional debut with the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2015.

Following his lone season in Atlanta, Cochran moved on to Oklahoma for his first stint with OKC Energy. In 2018, Cochran signed with Nashville SC and spent most of the season on loan to Fresno FC. He then signed for Fresno as a full-time player the following year and became a regular starter for the first time in his career, appearing in 35 games and recording seven clean sheets.

In 2020, Cochran made his return to OKC and started in 13 games during the shortened season. After a short loan to Nashville in MLS at the end of the year, Cochran returned to Oklahoma City in 2021 and started in 31 games and posted 9 clean sheets for the Western Conference side.

“CJ is an unbelievable guy that comes with the best recommendations from people we respect like Matt Pickens and Gary Smith at Nashville,” said Collins. “When you look at the players we’ve lost in Max Lachowecki, Zach Steinberger, and Jordan Doherty – these guys were really influential characters in the locker room. Now we’ve got someone who will come in and have a good influence. You can never really quantify how important character is. By all accounts, CJ is a really great guy that everyone respects. I’m excited to be working with him.”

ST PETERSBURG, FL – The Tampa Bay Rowdies have picked up a potent attacking option for the upcoming 2022 USL Championship season. On Thursday, the Rowdies announced the addition of forward Jake LaCava on loan from Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls.

“Jake is someone we highlighted early on,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “Thankfully, we were fortunate New York allowed him to come here and continue his development to get to that next step up to MLS, which is great.”

LaCava celebrated his 21st birthday this month and already has two seasons of professional soccer under his belt with New York Red Bulls II. In two seasons with New York, LaCava bagged 11 goals in 46 appearances. A native of New Jersey, LaCava spent two years developing at Barça Academy before moving on to LA Galaxy’s academy and then eventually the New York Red Bulls academy.

LaCava’s contract with New York Red Bulls II in the USL Championship ended at the conclusion of the 2021 season, but the young attacker’s performance and growth as a player over the last two seasons convinced the organization to secure him to a MLS deal. For Collins, LaCava’s fitness and work ethic on both sides of the ball made the young players an appealing addition.

“Jake has the attributes we like in a number 10,” said Collins. “The thing that always comes to people’s minds when it comes to a number 10 is what they bring on the ball, and he brings a lot on the ball. He’s direct, he can shoot from distance, he can go by players, he’s strong, he’s quick. He’s really exciting to watch. But then the next bit is, to play on our team you need to bring something against the ball and he definitely brings that. He really works hard. He can get around the field and he’s not gonna have a problem playing in our stadium and on our field because he’s a fit player. He brings both sides to it. We’re so excited to have him.”

ST PETERSBURG, FL – An invaluable piece to the success of the Tampa Bay Rowdies over the last two seasons is remaining in place for 2022. On Tuesday, club captain and forward Sebastian Guenzatti will continue to call Tampa Bay and Al Lang Stadium home after agreeing to a new contract.

“”I’m so excited to be back home and looking forward to another year here in Tampa Bay,” said Guenzatti. “Like always, we’ll leave everything out there on the field to put this club in a great position again. We’ve created a very good group, a family. The new guys coming in, I know they’re going to do a great job as well. The coaches have done a great job picking all the guys for this year.”

Guenzatti’s talent has been evident to all who have watched the Rowdies in recent seasons, but it was his tenacity and work rate that Rowdies Head Coach Collins was impressed by when he first took charge in 2018. Collins handed the captain’s armband to Guenzatti before the start of the 2019 season and the Uruguayan-born attacker has worn it ever since. 

This past season, Guenzatti became one of a select few in the Rowdies modern era to appear in over 100 matches for the Green and Gold. He now ranks third with 125 appearances since 2017.

“Seba has been pivotal in all the success this team has had over the previous two seasons,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “It would be easy to just forget how hard he has worked to make it possible. It is this work ethic that encapsulates everything it should mean to play for the Rowdies. Hard work, team first, and a never say die mentality. I am delighted that Seba will continue to lead this team on and off the field for the future.”

Guenzatti, 30, had a career-year in 2021, leading the Rowdies with 22 goals, besting the club record of 19 goals he set himself back in 2019. With 58 total goals since joining the Rowdies in 2017, Guenzatti is just three goals away from surpassing club legend Georgi Hristov as the club’s all-time leading scorer.

With Guenzatti confirmed to return, the Rowdies have four strikers on the roster with 50 or more goals in the USL Championship. Returning forwards Steevan Dos Santos and Lucky Mkosana, as well as newcomer Kyle Greig have all proven themselves to be consistent scoring threats throughout the years. Last year’s Rowdies squad finished the year with 65 goals, which was tied for second-most tallies in the USL.

The Rowdies have now secured the return of 15 players from last year’s team, which finished with the best record in the regular season and claimed the club’s second straight Eastern Conference title. With the addition of four new players so far, the Rowdies roster stands at 19 players. Announcements regarding new signings will be made soon.

ST PETERSBURG, FL – The Tampa Bay Rowdies boosted the club’s core of attacking players with the signing of veteran forward Kyle Greig on Friday. In his 9 seasons playing professional soccer, Greig has proven to be a consistent scoring threat in the USL Championship, tallying 62 regular season goals during stops at six different teams.

Greig spent the 2021 season with Eastern Conference rival Louisville City FC. The 31-year-old attacker joined the club in May of last year and went on to record five goals and two assists in 30 appearances.

“Kyle ticks all the boxes on and off the field,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “He is the type of character we look for and will fit in with the current squad well in that respect. I think we were looking for pretty distinct qualities in terms of being able to give us a focal point to bring other players into the game and Kyle certainly brings that. I believe he can be a huge threat in the box and he has goals in him.” 

Prior to his season in Louisville, Greig was teammates with Rowdies midfielder Lewis Hilton at Saint Louis FC. In three seasons with Saint Louis, Greig scored 24 goals across all competitions. Greig’s 24 goals and 83 appearances for Saint Louis marked career highs in both categories for him. Before joining Saint Louis, Greig played for several other teams within the USL, making stops at FC Cincinnati, OKC Energy FC, Vancouver Whitecaps II, and the Wilmington Hammerheads.

ST PETERSBURG, FL – The Tampa Bay Rowdies added to the club’s list of returning players from the record-setting 2021 squad on Thursday with the announcement of five more for the upcoming season. The latest group of returning players includes center back Aaron Guillen, midfielders Lewis Hilton and Laurence Wyke, attacker Juan Tejada, and the longest serving Rowdies player, Leo Fernandes. All five players have agreed to new contracts to continue representing the Rowdies on the field.

“We’ve worked as hard to bring these guys back as we have to make any new signings that we’re making,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “We said this time last year, that continuity is just so key to what we want to keep achieving. These are the guys that have put us in the positions we’ve been in, so we’re keen to bring them back and keep building on that.”

Fernandes, 30, has been with the Rowdies since the club joined the USL Championship in 2017. This past season, Fernandes surpassed 100 matches played for the Green and Gold. As he heads into 2022, Fernandes’ 119 appearances for ranks him fifth in the club’s modern era. The veteran creative midfielder was as reliably productive as ever in 2021, bagging nine goals and five assists. With 21 total assists in his time with the Rowdies, Fernandes also now ranks second all-time in assists for the club.

Hilton, 28, will be returning for his third season in Tampa Bay. After finding himself in and out of the starting lineup throughout the 2020 season, Hilton took hold of the starting spot in central midfield in 2021 and never let go. Hilton started in 34 out of 36 matches for the Rowdies in 2020, working tirelessly to marshal the middle of the field while also providing pin-point set piece deliveries. With Hilton’s stellar service, the Rowdies were again one of the most potent teams on set pieces. The English-born midfielder accounted for five assists in 2020 and notched a goal himself directly off a free kick.

Guillen also returns for his third season in Tampa Bay. The 28-year-old defender has been as steady and consistent as they come as the left-sided center back in Tampa Bay’s three-man back line. Guillen started in all but one match for the Rowdies this past year as the club posted a league-best 16 clean sheets, including a record-setting 891-minute streak without allowing a goal which set the stage for the Rowdies to finish with the best record in the regular season. Guillen’s performance in 2021 earned him a spot on the USL Championship’s All-League Second Team.

“Lewis and Leo have just had fantastic seasons, and Aaron as well,” said Collins. “The three of those guys have been so consistent, and I think consistency can’t be overrated, because that’s what gets you through those tough summer months. These are the guys that constantly produce.”

Tejada, 24, will be entering his fourth season for the Rowdies. While injury sidelined him for much of 2021, Tejada was a valuable asset for the Rowdies up top when he returned to full health in the last few months of the season. Collins believes the former Eckerd College star, who tallied 12 goals in his first two seasons for the Rowdies, has yet to reach his ceiling.

“We all know what Juan is capable of,” noted Collins. “Hopefully he can get a little bit of a break and stay fit. He showed last year when he started what a tremendous job he can do for the team. We all believe he’s got even more to offer.”

Wyke is the only player among Friday’s batch of announcements who made his Rowdies debut in 2021. He entered preseason camp late last year as a trialist and the club signed the Englishman with the idea of having him as depth primarily on the back line. Instead, the 25-year-old gained the confidence of the coaching staff to become a regular starter in the center of the field next to Hilton, busting up opposing attacks and feeding into Tampa Bay’s own attack. Expectations for Wyke in midfield are even higher now that he has a year of experience in the role to lean on.

“I enjoy watching Laurence play, just the energy he plays with,” said Collins. “I think playing in midfield last year, he made it look as if he’d played there for a long time, but he hasn’t. So, I suspect we can see him even more improved next year having had a year under his belt and a year in this environment. I expect to see him score more goals because he was very unfortunate in certain circumstances not to get more. I see in training how good he is, so I think we can see more goals from him as well.”

With this latest batch of returning players, the Rowdies now have 17 players confirmed for the roster for 2022.

ST PETERSBURG, FL – After an historic and record-breaking 2021 season, the Tampa Bay Rowdies are ready to top themselves in 2022.The path to achieving was laid out on Wednesday when the USL Championship revealed the full schedule for the new season. The Rowdies and 26 other teams across the league will play 34-games across eight months to determine which 14 teams will qualify for the USL Championship Playoffs.

After opening up the season at Birmingham Legion FC’s new home Protective Stadium on Sunday, March 13, the Rowdies return home to Al Lang Stadium for the first time in 2022 to face Indy Eleven on Saturday, March 19. That matchup against Indy is the first of 17 matches set to be played at Al Lang in the regular season. 14 of those home fixtures will take place on a Saturday night, with two others falling on a Friday.

Highlights of the Rowdies home schedule in April include a matchup with in-state rival Miami FC on Saturday, April 9 and a battle against Landon Donovan’s San Diego Loyal SC on Saturday, April 30. A date with perennial Eastern Conference contender Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday May 21 is the lone game for the Rowdies at Al Lang that month.

On Saturday, June 4, the Rowdies will host Louisville City FC in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Championship Final, in which the Rowdies came out on top after a dramatic comeback victory. The Rowdies will also have a second shot at Orange County SC on Saturday, August 27 as the Western Conference side returns to Al Lang for the first time since beating Tampa Bay in last year’s USL Championship Final.

In addition to San Diego, two other USL Championship teams will be making their first trips to Al Lang this season. The Rowdies welcome expansion side Detroit City FC to Downtown St Petersburg on Saturday, August 6. Meanwhile, one of the best teams the Western Conference has had to offer over the last few years, El Paso Locomotive FC, comes to town on Wednesday, September 28.

The Rowdies will also be traveling out west for several intriguing matchups this year. On Sunday, May 15, the Green and Gold face off against Western Conference powerhouse, Phoenix Rising FC. Then, on Saturday, August 20, the Rowdies take on last year’s USL Golden Ball and MVP winner Hadji Barry and the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field. Before they play two back-to-back home games to close out the regular season in October, the Rowdies will also travel to play USL Championship newcomer Monterey Bay FC.

The Rowdies are ramping up for another stellar season after finishing last year as regular season champions and claiming their second straight Eastern Conference title.
