ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A draw would have been enough for the Tampa Bay Rowdies to clinch the 2026 USL Championship Player’s on Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium. The contest versus second-place Detroit City FC looked to be heading that way as the 90th minute neared, but Rowdies Midfielder Sebastian Cruz delivered an emphatic long-distance strike to secure a 1-0 victory and ensure the Rowdies lifted the Players’ Shield with an exclamation point.
“Everybody loves winning,” Rowdies Head Coach Dominic Casciato remarked after the match. “Everyone’s in the game because they love winning, but to win with these players, with this staff, it’s just so special. So, I really want to cherish tonight and everything we’ve done this season and hopefully it gets left in the tank for us to keep on for (the playoffs).”
The league’s two best defenses lived up the hype on Saturday. Neither side was able to register a shot on goal through the first 45 minutes. The visitors, though, had a promising chance just before the halftime whistle after their leading scorer Darren Smith won the ball in an advantageous position in Tampa Bay’s defensive third. With only Rowdies Goalkeeper Jahmali Waite ahead to beat, Smith charged forward only to be let down by a heavy touch as Waite rushed off his line to pressure him into the error. Defender Laurence Wyke then swooped in to collect the loose ball and nullify the scoring chance.
Waite was called on to protect the clean sheet again in the 70th minute. Detroit’s Ates Dious was the one to probe the Rowdies net, firing a strike from the top of the box that looked to be on its way to sneaking just under the crossbar for a goal until Waite tipped it up and over the bar for a corner kick.
By blanking Detroit, this year’s Rowdies squad has matched the single-season club record of 15 shutouts from the 2021 season, which is also the last time the Rowdies won the Players’ Shield.
“Defense wins championships,” said Waite. “It’s not just the defenders buying into that. Guys in the front in our press play a part. How we defend, it’s everyone together, and we’ve got to be able to do that.”
Cruz’s go-ahead tally to clinch the Players’ Shield came in the 88th minute. As Detroit looked to quickly move the ball up the field on a counterattack, the Rowdies applied pressure to cause a turnover. Cruz pounced on the ball and dribbled forward, leaving a crowd of defenders in his wake before ripping a right-footed effort 30 yards out from goal that dipped down just in time to glance off the underside of the crossbar and hit the back of the net.
“We’ve got great players, we’ve got great spirit, and I think even if we’re losing 2-0, I always feel like we’ve got a way to get back into the game,” said Casciato. “It’s just the way I am. So I wasn’t surprised that we found a winner, and those moments are really, really special.
The historic tally was Cruz’s fourth goal of the season.
“I take a lot of pride in finishing outside of the box,” said Cruz. “I feel like, as a midfielder, especially sometimes as a defensive midfielder, I get a lot of chances on top of the box. I take a lot of pride in trying to shoot from outside the box in practice. I feel like when I got that ball and I didn’t see anybody step, I said, ‘you know what, I’m going to hit it.’ It was kind of like a natural instinct.”
As winners of the Players’ Shield, the Rowdies have clinched home field advantage throughout the 2026 USL Championship Playoffs. As the top seed in the Eastern Conference, the Rowdies will host the 8th seed in the conference at Al Lang Stadium on Friday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
“We’ve still got a long way to go,” said Casciato. “Obviously, what we’ve done this season so far has been great. But I think this is year one of a project where we have 21 new players. If you look at the other teams that have 21 new players in our league, they’re at the bottom of the table. So, the fact that we’re able to do what we’ve done is pretty incredible, and the players deserve all the credit in the world for that, as do the rest of the staff. We’re only just getting started, and I’m really excited for what’s ahead. But before we think about that, we want to enjoy tonight.”
