Leo Fernandes signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies on January 18, 2017.
Fernandes, 25, arrives in Tampa Bay after spending the previous four seasons with Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union. Born in Brazil but raised in New York, Fernandes attended Stony Brook University before being drafted with the 62nd overall pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft by Philadelphia. He played for amateur sides Brooklyn Knights and Reading United while in college.
Fernandes made his first team debut for the Union in 2013 before being sent on loan to the USL’s Harrisburg City Islanders, making 10 appearances for the Islanders in 2013 and 2014. Fernandes was loaned to the NASL’s New York Cosmos in 2015 and immediately became an impact player for New York, scoring eight goals in 28 appearances.
2016 saw Fernandes split his time between the Union and Bethlehem Steel in the USL.
2016 stats: Twelve appearances (two starts) for the Union, playing 255 minutes in MLS … Fourteen appearances (all starts) on loan to the Bethlehem Steel, playing 1,206 minutes … Scored one goal for the Steel.
2015: Twenty-eight minutes (22 starts) on loan to the New York Cosmos, playing 1,896 minutes … Scored eight goals in NASL play, plus two more in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup … Was selected as NASL Young Player of the Year as best played in the league aged 23 or younger.
2014: Thirteen appearances (seven starts) for the Union, playing 698 minutes in MLS … Three appearances (one start) on loan to the Harrisburg City Islanders, playing 106 minutes.
