After one of the most successful regular seasons in club history, the Tampa Bay Rowdies are set to kick off in the 2026 USL Championship Playoffs this Friday at Al Lang Stadium in an Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup against Miami FC. For the first time since 2021, the Rowdies enter the playoffs as the top overall seed as winners of the USL Championship Players’ Shield, guaranteeing hosting rights throughout their quest for a third championship star.
Fueled by the bitter disappointment of missing out on qualifying for last year’s playoffs, the Rowdies bounced back with an overhauled roster to mount an impressive campaign that began with a 12-match undefeated streak to take early control of the Players’ Shield race. The Rowdies never relented their hold on the top spot in the standings, ultimately securing the Players’ Shield with one match to spare. The Rowdies ended their campaign with a record of 18W-5L-7D, becoming the first team to claim the Players’ Shield after missing the postseason the previous year.
Balance in Everything
One of the many notable aspects of the Rowdies campaign to claim the Players’ Shield was the balance shown by the club at both ends of the field throughout the regular season. The Rowdies were the only side to rank in the top three in the league in both goals (52) and goals conceded (26) this year. The same goes for how the Rowdies ranked in terms of Expected Goals (49.06xG) and Expected Goals Against (28.47xGA).
Closing Strong
The balance shown by the Rowdies also extends to the crucial final stages of matches. The club’s +12-goal differential in the final 15 minutes and stoppage time this season ranks the best across the entire USL Championship. That ability to lock things down or find a breakthrough moment in front of the opposition goal can prove crucial in the single elimination format of the USL Championship Playoffs.
Scouting Miami
Miami make their return to the USL Championship Playoffs for the first time since 2022. That year, the Rowdies knocked their in-state rivals out of the playoffs in a 3-1 result when the two sides met at Al Lang in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Second-year Head Coach Gastón Maddoni lead Miami over the playoff line as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference thanks in large part to a six-match unbeaten streak (four wins, two draws) that included all of September and the first week of October. Miami’s rally to claim the final playoff spot in the east also included a 2-1 win over the Rowdies at Al Lang earlier this month. Maddoni will not be on the touchline for Miami this Friday as he serves a suspension for a red card received in the club’s regular season finale.
Beating the Odds
In theory, winning the USL Championship Players’ Shield can set a club up for success. However, the reality is that the playoffs can prove to be a whole different animal for the top team from the regular season. The Players’ Shield winner has lost in the first round of the playoffs in two of the last three years. San Antonio FC in 2022 were the last Players’ Shield to win the USL Championship title in the playoffs. Rowdies Head Coach Dominic Casciato experienced both sides of the coin during his time leading Union Omaha in USL League One. Casciato guided Omaha to back-to-back Players’ Shield. Omaha fell short of their ultimate goal in the playoffs in 2023 but got the job done the following year in the USL League One Final.
Historic Defense
They say defense wins championships. The Rowdies historically good defense this year has already helped the club claim its second USL Championship Players’ Shield. With a fully contingent of healthy defenders at their disposal, the Rowdies will be a formidable challenge for the opposition to break down. The Rowdies claimed a club record 16 shutouts in the regular season, with an addition four shutouts potsed in the Prinx Tires USL Cup.
Halloween at Al Lang
The Rowdies are inviting kick off the Halloween Weekend at Al Lang Stadium for the Rowdies playoff matchup with Miami. Trick or treat stations for families will be set up in the Michelob Ultra Fan Zone outside of Gate 2 prior to the match and inside the stadium. Fans are encouraged to come dressed for the occasion in their Halloween costumes. Select fans will also be chosen to take part in several costume contests during halftime.
