ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 12, 2018) — The Tampa Bay Rowdies head to New Jersey this weekend to take on the New York Red Bulls 2 for the first time since the Red Bulls knocked the Rowdies out of the playoffs last season.
The three games in this series last year averaged 4.67 goals per game, so it could be a wide-open attacking bonanza.
Here’s a look at a few of the other important matches taking place around the USL this weekend.
New York Red Bulls II vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies
Saturday, 4 p.m. | ESPN+
New York has won both of its home matches this year, topping Toronto FC II and Charleston at Red Bull Arena, so the Rowdies must be at the top of their game.
Tampa Bay is coming off its first 5-0 win of the Modern Era and has a couple of red-hot attacking players in Leo Fernandes and Georgi Hristov. Hristov’s next goal will tie him with Derek Smethurst for the Rowdies’ all-time scoring record at 57 goals.
Indy Eleven vs. Nashville SC
Saturday, 12 p.m. | ESPN+
Indy picked up a road win at North Carolina FC and now looks for its first home win at Lucas Oil Stadium against a team in good form.
Nashville has won its last two games, beating both Bethlehem and Charlotte, to climb up to fifth place in the USL’s Eastern Conference. A first match against Midwest rival Indy is another good test for the expansion side.
Charlotte Independence vs. North Carolina FC
Saturday, 7 p.m. | ESPN+
Charlotte is unbeaten in three home matches this season and now faces a first-ever league match against North Carolina FC.
North Carolina FC is still in search of its first point in the USL, having lost all three matches it has played so far this season and now must travel to face an in-state rival and established USL power.
