Here’s a look at how the Eastern Conference matches we highlighted in our preview last week ended up.
Louisville City FC 2 – 1 Tampa Bay Rowdies
Louisville Slugger Field, Louisville, Kentucky
Rowdies goalkeeper Matt Pickens was called into action off the bench early, replacing the injured Akira Fitzgerald in the 16th minute. Louisville pulled ahead in the 22nd minute and doubled its lead in the 87th, but the Rowdies kept pushing and Martin Paterson scored a debut goal in the 89th, but it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.
FC Cincinnati 4 – 0 Saint Louis FC
Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio
FC Cincinnati eased to a 4-0 thrashing over Saint Louis FC, who entered the match as the Eastern Conference leaders, in its home opener. Djiby Fall scored all four of Cincinnati’s goals to move to the top of the Golden Boot race and lift FCC into the top half of the table.
Richmond Kickers 0 – 1 Ottawa Fury FC
City Stadium, Richmond, Virginia
Ottawa picked up its first win of the season in spectacular fashion, with Steevan Dos Santos catching Kickers goalkeeper Matt Turner off his line and scoring from the halfway line. Dos Santos’ wonder goal was the only goal of the match.
