Rowdies Announce Perry Van Der Beck as General Manager
Today the Rowdies named Perry Van Der Beck as General Manager of the St. Petersburg, Florida-based North American Soccer League franchise. The club also announced that Ryan Helfrick will be returning to the Rowdies Front Office as Director of Sales.
A captain of the 1980 United States Olympic soccer team and 1984 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year, Van Der Beck began his professional career with the Rowdies in 1978, when he was the first player in NASL history to be drafted out of high school. He has held leadership positions with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the Tampa Bay Terror, and recently served as the Executive Vice President, Technical Director and Director of Player Development for the Rowdies.
“Perry is the perfect man to lead the Rowdies into this new era,” said club owner and chairman Bill Edwards. “His personal history with the team, along with his passion, vision and proven track record at developing young talent, will help him build a perennial winner here in Tampa Bay. Together we will do great things for the club and our community.”
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” said Van Der Beck. “The Rowdies organization has held a special place in my heart for the last 35 years, and we’re blessed with the most boisterous, enthusiastic fans in all of NASL. We captured the Soccer Bowl Championship in 2012, and my entire staff is focused on returning the championship trophy to Tampa Bay – where it belongs. I look forward to helping Bill Edwards create not just the best on-field soccer team, but the best fan experience anywhere in the country.”
Van Der Beck has earned industry-wide acclaim as one of the premier developers of new soccer talent: From 1988 through 1994, Van Der Beck was a star player and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, and also made 23 appearances for the U.S. National Team. Among his many individual awards are 1984 U.S. Player of the Year and captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. During the 2003-2004 season, Van Der Beck was a staff coach with the Adidas Elite Soccer Program, which identifies the nation’s best high school players and coaches them in a weeklong training program. From 2004 to 2006, he was head coach and technical director of the Olympic Development Program for the Super Y League, a National Youth League.
The new Director of Sales, Ryan Helfrick joined the Rowdies for the 2010 season as a ticket sales representative, and was quickly promoted to Director of Sales in 2011. One year later, he was named Vice President of Sales for the Rowdies. Helfrick left the Rowdies at the end of 2012 season to pursue new marketing opportunities and assist other sports franchises, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Helfrick is excited to return to the Rowdies organization.
