Rowdies Sign Goalkeeper Cody Mizell
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced Monday the signing of goalkeeper Cody Mizell to a two-year contract, with the second year being a club option.
Mizell, 22, appeared as a trialist in the last two Rowdies preseason games, playing a combined 56 minutes without allowing a goal. He spent the 2013 season with the Atlanta Silverbacks, appearing only in the Fall season finale.
"Since bringing Cody in for preseason, he has adapted well with the team and we are pleased with his progress so far,” Tampa Bay general manager Perry Van Der Beck said. “He has a great attitude, with an equally impressive work ethic. Our goal is to develop Cody into a premier keeper in the NASL."
Mizell played his college soccer at Clemson and was also involved in the United States under-17 and under-18 national teams. He’ll help to provide depth while last year’s NASL Golden Glove winner Diego Restrepo recovers from a torn Achilles suffered Feb. 25.
“I heard about Restrepo’s injury and I was with another team at the time and the Rowdies called me in,” Mizell said. “I had a good week of training and just doing what I do. I’m coming in to help the team any way I can. I came here to work hard. That’s what I do best.”
Mizell and the Rowdies will continue their 2014 Preseason next weekend on Saturday, March 22, when they take on NPSL's Tampa Marauders at Naimoli Stadium in downtown Tampa, Fla. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
