Rowdies Announce Stuart Campbell As Assistant Coach

The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced that Stuart Campbell has joined the Rowdies coaching staff as the permanent assistant coach for the 2014 NASL Season.

Campbell brings a wealth of firsthand knowledge and experience to the coaching staff, having played professionally for a number of international clubs, including Leicester City, Bristol Rovers, Birmingham City, Grimsby Town and most recently the Rowdies.

“I am delighted and honored to take up the position of assistant coach for the Rowdies,” said Campbell.  “I look forward to continue working and learning from general manager Perry Van Der Beck and head coach Ricky Hill, who I believe form one of the best technical staffs in U.S. Soccer.  I can’t wait to get started with preseason, as I am sure there are exciting times ahead under the new ownership led by Bill Edwards.  Lastly, I would like to thank all the fans who have been great to my family and me since joining the Rowdies in 2012.”

Campbell joined the Rowdies in the 2012 season and quickly established himself as a team leader during the club’s 2012 NASL Soccer Bowl Championship run, starting in 26 regular season and 4 playoff matches. Throughout the 2013 season he doubled as player and assistant coach, totaling 15 matches and 12 starts.  Stuart Campbell’s experience and passion were cited as determining factors for the club’s decision to permanently add him to the coaching staff.

“The selection of Stuart Campbell for assistant coach was an obvious choice for the club,” said Rowdies general manager Perry Van Der Beck.  “Having worked with him over the past two seasons, I have witnessed his commitment to the organization and his passion for the game.  His level of knowledge is impressive and the players demonstrate the utmost respect for him.  Stuart has played soccer at the highest level in the English Premier League and he knows what it takes to motivate players to elevate their game.  Of equal importance, Stuart exhibits the type of high-caliber character that will blend in well with the coaching staff and will bring another championship to our deserving fans."

The Scottish midfielder began his professional playing career at Leicester City where he remained from 1996-2000. Campbell went on loan with League One side Birmingham City in 2000.  Campbell then signed for Grimsby Town, a team in which he played from 2000-2004, making 117 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

Campbell was then transferred to Bristol Rovers, a club in which he enjoyed a long and successful tenure, playing 288 league matches across eight seasons from 2004-2011. Campbell was The Pirates’ captain for five years while they competed in League One, the third-highest division of The Football League. During his time at the club, Bristol Rovers were able to reach the quarterfinals of the FA Cup in 2007-08, their best showing in 50 years.
