Scouting the Spartans
The Spartans are coming off a 2013 Season that saw them reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Sunshine State Conference.
In 2013, the Spartans finished the season with a record of 6-8-3 (W-T-L) under the helm of Adrian Bush, who is now in his 10th season with UT. The university’s defense is led by juniors Andrew Clare and Alex Knaggs. Clare is the younger brother of former Rowdies forward Matt Clare, who played for the Green and Gold during the 2011 and 2012 NASL Seasons. Last year Clare was a Second-team all-Sunshine State Conference, starting 15 of the Spartans 17 games. Knaggs earned the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was one of two players to start all 17 games for UT.
Midfielder Nasyir Rodriguez leads UT’s midfielder having started 16 matches last year, while playing in all 17 games. The midfielder recorded a team-high 1510 minutes during the 2013 season.
During last year’s preseason tour, the Rowdies defeated the University of Tampa 3-1 at Pepin Stadium. Goals from Keith Savage, Shane Hill and Georgi Hristov lifted the Rowdies to victory on Saturday, March 19, 2013.
The Rowdies enter Saturday’s game having tied their first preseason match last week against USF. Forward Carl Cort opened up the scoring in the first half but the Rowdies would go down a goal after the Bulls scored two goals in a span of three minutes. Midfielder Evans Frimpong would level the match at 2-2 in the 76th minute with a strike from inside the 18-yard box.
For newcomer Ryan Thompson, this match will be special as he will be returning to play against his former university. The goalkeeper spent four years at UT, where he made more than 50 appearances before graduating in 2009.
The Rowdies will continue their 2014 Preseason next weekend on Saturday, March 15, when they take on Florida Gulf Coast University at Walter Fuller Park in St. Petersburg, Fla. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. ET and admission is free of charge.
