All year long, we will be bringing you up close to members of the FC Tampa Bay team.
In this installment, we feature goalkeeper Evan Newton, who joined FC Tampa Bay on loan from the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer on May 5.
Newton made his debut with the team during an exhibition match against the English Premier League's Bolton Wanderers on July 14, making six saves in the second half to combine with Jeff Attinella for a 1-0 shutout. He has started two league matches this season, including a 4-0 victory at Atlanta on August 6.
Newton was selected by Houston in the first round (seventh pick overall) of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft. He recently graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in sports management, and finished as the Monarchs’ all-time leader in saves and shutouts.
Newton, who hails from Virginia Beach, was named first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association in 2010 after posting a 1.07 goals against average and is a former member of the U.S. U-17 national team. In 2007, Newton was named the Premier Development League Goalkeeper of the Year and was named NSCAA Adidas Youth All-American three times in 2002, 2003, and 2005.
