Since the Rowdies switched to a 4-3-3 formation several weeks ago, midfielder Evans Frimpong has began to excel offensively. He has scored two goals in his last two matches, becoming one of Tampa Bay’s main offensive threats in the NASL Fall Season.
“The tactical change has shifted me forward on the field,” commented Frimpong. “When Ricky told me he was moving me up top I knew I had to start scoring more goals. The way we are playing now fits perfectly with my style of play.”
When the 2013 season began, Frimpong saw himself outpacing players but he would be unable to make an impact on the games. After Week 7 of the NASL Fall Season, he has proven to be a key component of the Rowdies offensive third.
“He was struggling earlier this year to demonstrate his talents on gameday,” explained Rowdies Executive Vice President and Technical Director Perry Van Der Beck. “Over the course of the year he has constantly grown as a player and it has really shown on the pitch. He is now influencing the outcome of recent matches and we are pleased with his success.”
Tampa Bay continued to improve their attack, bringing in forwards Etienne Barbara and Lucky Mkosana for the NASL Fall Season. Frimpong has benefited from these new additions and is content with the level of talent they bring to the pitch.
“I couldn’t ask for better teammates,” said the Ghanaian midfielder. “They are very skilled players and when you add those that were already at the club, it makes us one of the best teams in the league.”
Frimpong joined the Rowdies in May of 2012 but his limited playing time did not allow him to show his abilities on the field. This season has been different, with Head Coach Ricky Hill relying on the midfielder to play a key role in the Rowdies attacking third.
“It is great to know that Ricky trusts my skills,” expressed Frimpong. “With that being said, I am not done yet as I want to continue to grow as a player. I need to work on my finishing in the final third, which in turn I know will help this team win another championship.”
When the Rowdies take the field this Saturday against the Silverbacks, Frimpong will look to score in his third-straight league match. Saturday’s match will feature the Family Four Pack special presented by the Tampa Bay Times. This includes four (4) Tickets and four (4) meal vouchers for half-off a hotdog and half-off a soft drink.
