FC Tampa Bay today announced that it has added goalkeeper Evan Newton on loan from the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer, pending league and USSF approval, for the remainder of the 2011 NASL season. FCTB starting goalkeeper Daryl Sattler suffered a season-ending torn ACL in last Saturday's draw with Atlanta and was replaced by rookie Jeff Attinella, who is expected to make his first career start this Saturday at home against Carolina.
Newton (6-2, 185) was selected by Houston in the first round (seventh pick overall) of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft. He recently graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in sports management, and finished as the Monarchs’ all-time leader in saves and shutouts.
Newton, who hails from Virginia Beach, was named first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association in 2010 after posting a 1.07 goals against average and is a former member of the U.S. U-17 national team. In 2007, Newton was named the Premier Development League Goalkeeper of the Year and was named NSCAA Adidas Youth All-American three times in 2002, 2003, and 2005.
PRACTICE UPDATE
FC Tampa Bay practiced for nearly three hours Thursday morning at Al Lang Stadium as it readies for this Saturday's match against the RailHawks.
Carolina enters the match on a three-match unbeaten streak (two wins, one tie) and sits in second place in the current NASL standings with seven points. Forward Etienne Barbara, the league's Player of the Month for April, is tied for the league lead with Puerto Rico's Jonathan Fana with four goals thus far.
